Japanese Market Outreach: Demographics

Demographics of Japanese in the United States

Every month more than 300,000 Japanese tourists visit the United States, and those numbers increase by an average of three to five percent annually.

  • In the United States, approximately 3,000 Japanese-owned companies employ thousands of Japanese nationals and experts.
  • Asian-Americans make up five percent of the U.S. population, of which nearly one million are Japanese-American.
  • Each year 500,000 Japanese tourists visit the five boroughs of New York City.
  • More than 100,000 resident Japanese nationals live in Metropolitan New York, many of whom work for the Demographics 800 regional companies owned by, or affiliated with, Japanese business interests.
  • Like many U.S. baby boomers, the Japanese nearing retirement are flush with cash and craving a level of excitement that only a dramatic sports event can fulfill. Tennis and golf events, such as the Masters Golf Tournament, continue to lure Japanese spectators who spend lavishly on travel and entertainment.
